Marc Vanderleenen (b. 1952, Mechelen, BE) Antwerp-based Marc Vanderleenen’s work is a reflection on the medium and history of painting from classical landscapes and the orderliness of Cezanne to the abstraction of Leon Kossoff, Frank Auerbach and Willem de Kooning. His approach involves both taking inspiration from and hollowing out classical influences from the past. Figuration is reduced to the strictly essential, and the pervasive mood is melancholy and world-weariness. Recent solo exhibitions include Inhabitence 2026 and The Pale Horse 2024 (both Annie Gentils Gallery, Antwerp) and Art on Paper with Marc de Blieck, BOZAR, Brussels 2021. Vanderleenen is represented by Annie Gentils Gallery, Antwerp.
