Dana Frankfort (b. 1971, Houston, USA) addresses both the linguistic and formal qualities of text in her paintings, which occupy a hazy space between verbal and visual communication. Simple words or statements are scrawled, painted over and repainted until they become abstracted, their meanings amplified through reflection and repetition. Frankfort received a BA in Art History from Brandeis University (1995) and a MA in Fine Art from Yale School of Art (1997.) She has held residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Yaddo, Ox-Bow, and the MFAH Core Studio Art and has received an Artadia Award and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship Frankfort’s work has been exhibited widely in Europe and the USA and her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), Rice University (Houston, TX), St. Edward’s University (Austin, TX), and The Jewish Museum (New York, NY).
