Artist Residencies

The studio and cottage at No31 are set in a tranquil garden in Duns in the Scottish Borders. Artists and creatives of any kind are invited to come and make use of the studio space to develop their artwork practice in any way they feel appropriate.

How to book

To book, get in touch with Mark on or by emailing us. Initially it’s probably best to get in touch to discuss availability.

Duration

Residencies are a minimum of two weeks duration. Checking-in after 3pm and checking-out by 10am.

Get in touch if you would like to explore available dates in 2025 or 2026.

Price

£1500 for two weeks (14 nights)
£2800 for four weeks (28 nights)

Included in the price:

A double height, well-lit studio (9m x 4.5m)
Accommodation for up to four people
Heating and electricity.
Gas for cooking.
Bed linen and towels.
Tea towels, cloths
Dish Washer, oven, microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge
Good Wifi

Please note:

Residencies are offered on a first-come-first-served basis and can not be reserved without a deposit.
All studio equipment and art materials should be provided by the artist, although we can provide some studio furniture such as work benches, chairs, etc if required. Please get in touch to discuss.
We have a ‘No Smoking’ policy including e-cigarettes in the accommodation and the studio.
We are dog-friendly, but ask that you discuss this with us beforehand (two dogs max).
We don’t charge extra for cleaning so please make sure you leave the cottage and studio in a clean and tidy state please.

The studio is an airy double height space with plenty of natural light. The space is approximately 4.5m by 9m by 4m high and has been converted from an early 18th century stable. It would be suitable for the development of any creative work.

The studio is also an occasional gallery space run on a non-commercial basis. Between three and four times a year we put on an exhibition of the work of artists we like. The use of the studio as a gallery would not coincide with a residency.

The accommodation is in a cottage next to the studio. It comfortably sleeps four. It has a large sitting room, a fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower. A patio leads from the sitting room onto a small private garden. Like the studio, the cottage is a converted 18th century stable.

The cottage is wheelchair accessible. One of the double bedrooms is located on the ground floor, as is a bathroom with the walk-in shower.

We are dog friendly, but ask that you discuss this with us first.

Terms and conditions

We ask for a non refundable deposit of 50% to secure a booking. Payment in full to be received 4 weeks prior to arrival via bank transfer. Sorry, but we don’t accept credit cards.
If you need to cancel less than 4 weeks from your arrival date, the full fee is payable if we have been unable to secure an alternative booking.

No31 takes no responsibility for the loss or damage of personal property, vehicles or their person. Users are expected to have their own insurance to cover any such loss or damage while visiting the studio and its grounds.

Funding

Residencies are currently only available on a personally funded basis. We hope to be able to offer some fully funded opportunities in the near future. You are welcome to seek your own alternative funding sources to help cover costs.
